Southern Spars fits new mast and rigging for superyacht SalpertonThe 45m (148ft) performance sloop Salperton IV is now sailing again with brand-new hybrid modulus carbon fibre mast and an EC6 continuous rigging package from Southern Spars. Having been built to a tight deadline by Southern Spars’ Custom Projects team in New Zealand, the replacement mast was fitted and dock-tuned by Southern Spars’ Rig Pro team, on 20 October in Tarragona, Spain. ![]() Southern Spars’ director Paul MacDonald says the Rig Pro team then accompanied Salperton to Palma de Mallorca where her original Southern Spars-built boom and new Doyle sail package were installed. “We had the mast and rig completely installed by 24 October,” says MacDonald. “Then we’ve been undertaking sea trials from 26 October with the owner signing off on the new package on 29 October.” Salperton’s new mast has an overall length of 61.52m. During the remake, the owner took the opportunity of upgrading the Furling boom to incorporate the innovative inboard end batten car system. A modification was made to the forward end of the existing boom to accommodate the new batten car system. MacDonald adds: “She also has a removable radar pod and guard so the crew can easily prepare her for racing.” Following the successful completion of sea trials off Palma, Salperton is now heading to the Caribbean where it will take part in the BVI superyacht regatta and the St Barths Bucket.
