SoniHull ultrasonic anti hull growth technology has saved one northland vessel owner thousands of dollars and hours of time in preventing unwanted hull growth.
The owner’s 48-foot Riviera is fitted with a single SoniHull Duo ultrasonic antifouling system, designed for vessels over 17m in length.
The SoniHull protection system utilizes digital electronics and Ultrasonic transducer technology, by producing multiple bursts of ultra sonic energy simultaneously in a multiple range of frequencies. This energy produces a pattern of alternating positive and negative pressure.
The alternating pattern creates microscopic bubbles during periods of negative pressure and implodes them during periods of positive pressure in a phenomenon known as ‘cavitation.’
The implosion creates a micro-jet action that not only provides the cleaning effect on the hulls surface below the waterline; it also resonates and destroys single cell organisms such as algae. The removal of the initial link in the food chain inhibits the growth barnacles and other marine life that feed on the algae.
The SoniHull is one of the only systems that can run off 12V, 24V and 230V and is suitable for all types of hulls except wood, cement or foam core – modifications can be made for foam core however.
The Rivera 48 is berthed at the marine complex at Doves Bay Northland. With the bay having brackish water, vessels moored in the marina suffer a high rate of marine growth.
Prior to installing the SoniHull, the Riviera 48 would loose performance and fuel consumption would increase due to the growth rate on the hull, resulting in the vessel having to be washed regularly.
The owner is very pleased with how the SoniHull product has performed, no regular washing and no increased fuel costs all of which have contributed to paying for the unit many times over.
These pictures are of the vessel as it emerged from the water in June 2014.
After 11 months in the water, when the vessel was pulled out, the underside including the keel, shaft exit, water pick up & transducers were still clean, albeit the odd lone barnacle present. The bow section including thruster propeller and blades were also clean, the only presence of barnacles was on the drive and on the end of the prop hub.
