Tauranga-based manufacturer, Altex Coatings Ltd is celebrating 60 years of developing, manufacturing and marketing protective coatings to the industrial, commercial and pleasure marine markets. Having developed from a small garage-run operation, Altex has experienced many changes and significant expansion since 1954.
Managing Director, Mike O’Sullivan, feels strongly about the continuous evolution of the company, keeping it fresh, spearheading the industry with constant reinvestment in technology, staff, training and customer education. Having evolved from developing coatings for the pulp and paper industry, Altex has grown at a phenomenal rate, now supplying coatings for a multitude of markets including oil and gas, bridge and highway, water and wastewater, petrochemicals/refineries, marine, power and more. Altex now employs over 70 staff nationwide with manufacturing plants, shops and resellers in NZ, Australia and the South Pacific. The company is part of the Resene Group of companies, which adds a specialised industrial coatings manufacturer to the Resene Portfolio.
Back in 2009, Altex formed an alliance with global industrial giant Carboline, which contributed to Altex’s expansion. The growth of the company following this alliance allowed for large scale technological advances within our New Zealand industry, says Altex Sales Manager Australasia, Ricky Collins.
Altex boasts a strong team of professional project management staff, coating engineers and technical field staff. Employing staff nationwide in most main cities, the Tauranga headquarters accounts for 50 employees, making it their hub of their business.
“The Bay of Plenty is part of an industrial belt running through middle New Zealand. It has a great export port and is well located for access to the hydro dairy, pulp, paper and oil industries in which we are active. Being based in Tauranga is ideal,” says Collins.
Alongside the New Zealand branches, Altex also has a manufacturing plant in Queensland and Australian branches based in five main centres. For Altex and the Resene group, research and development are top priorities, injecting funds into training and development of the team and technologies for the past 15 years, maintaining Altex’s position as an industry leader.
Within the company, there is a wealth of knowledge, with some staff being part of the Altex team for over 30 years. Ricky Collins has been with Altex for 25 years while Managing Director, Mike O’Sullivan has accumulated a staggering 50 years; both a real credit to the Altex family. The company focuses on not only quality product, but also customer service and guiding their customers from project start to finish.
Alongside their strong business portfolio, Altex are involved in supporting various charities and events. A major sponsor of the New Zealand Coastguard, the company believes in supporting causes that really protect and develop their community, says Collins. A good fit given their marine expertise.
