Q-West Boat Builders has added another string to its bow with the launch of Mikotahi; Port Taranaki’s new pilot boat. The 19.5-metre boat was built at Q-West’s Castlecliff yard in Wanganui, and underwent sea trials in late May.
The vessel proved her exceptional seaworthiness during those trials and is a landmark development in the company’s history. It’s the first boat designed by renowned Scottish pilot boat designers, Camarc, to be built in the yard and should stand Q-West in good stead for future build tenders.
With tenders submitted from competitors in Europe, the UK, Australian and around the New Zealand, Q-West was pleased to secure the contract for the aluminium monohull, with two Scania diesel engines powering twin Hamilton Jets. Cruising at 23 knots, Mikotahi will become a regular sight on Port Taranaki waters, as well as being used as a back up boat to service the Pohokura gas platform.
