Southern Spars has seen a fantastic resurgence in the racing and performance markets. One of the biggest growth sectors has come from the Grand Prix TP 52 Med Cup Fleet. Last year Southern supplied one rig to the new TP 52 Phoenix sailing team, this new owner driver team who went on to place a very respectable fourth in the 2014 series, only racing four of the six race series – an amazing feat considering the extremely high level of racing in this class .
For the coming 2015 season we are very proud to announce SSNZ will be supplying eight new rigs for new TP 52 projects. We have return customers with the Azzura, RAN, Gladiator Sled and the Alegre team – moving over from the IRC 72 fleet. New comers to SSNZ is Platoon, Provezza and special mention Quantum Racing who will sport a full SSNZ rig package for this coming season.
The racing yachts below have also been delivered or are in production:
IRC 72 – Mini Maxi
Moving up the size scale and into a class with a similar intensity of racing, the IRC 72 fleet has seen an increase in numbers with the Alegre and the new RAN.
At the recent Maxi Worlds SS rigged boats took a clean sweep of the podium with Alegre, Robertissima, Ran, 1, 2, 3 respectively.
In the coming year Southern Spars have three new 72 projects – the Robertissima will get a new rig for the current boat and a new project – JV 72’ Momo.
Also of special mention – the existing Bella Mente will receive a new SS rig for 2015.
Southern have recently delivered the rig package for new Uber 100’ Maxi – Comanche from the VPLP/Verde drawing board. This project lifts the bar even higher from projects like Speed Boat with 30% more rigging moment, a canting keel depth of 6.5m !! and the boat will carry a code zero 50% bigger in area than a J Boat #1 Genoa…….the project will debut at the coming Sydney Hobart race, so keep an eye out for it at the end of this year.
Staying with the 100’ size range, we have under construction the 3rd Wally Cento – SWITCHBACK, which will join the Open Season (formally Hamilton) and the Magic Carpet 3 in the 2015 European summer racing circuit.
A little smaller, but no less exciting is the new Juan K design 90’ Maxi Rambler, currently finishing at New England Boat Works, the boat features a full SS rig package tailored offshore racing.
