The launch of CaryAli was significant for Auckland-based Alloy Yachts – the 39.16 m expedition motoryacht has a steel hull, the first to be built by the award-winning yard best known for its premium aluminum-hulled sailing yachts.
Formerly known as project AY44, CaryAli commenced construction in July 2010 and is designed by René Van der Velden with an interior by Redman Whiteley Dixon. With a gross tonnage slightly under 500 GRT, a beam of 8.9 m and a draft of 2.7 m, she’s optimised for long range cruises with large interior volumes, storage and decks outside. This is the first yacht the North American owners have built with Alloy Yachts, but their representative, Peter Wilson of MCM, has worked on several projects with Alloy Yachts.
CaryAli is the second explorer motoryacht built by Alloy Yachts following the delivery of VvS1 in 2007. She is currently nearing the end of sea trials to be ready for delivery before the end of 2012.
The yard presently has three projects in-build. AY45 is a Dubois-designed 43.9 m sloop with an interior from Alloy Yachts’ own interior design team. Due to be launched early in 2013, the new yacht will be called Encore and is being built for a repeat customer who still owns the 32.6 m Eclipse.
Ed Dubios also designed AY46, a 56.4 m ketch which will be the new Mondango for customers who own the original Mondango (AY37), a 51.7 m ketch delivered in 2008. Alloy Yachts’ managing director Tony Hambrook says the owners loved the process of building a boat so much that they were keen to do it again. “They also wanted to put in all that they have learned from 55,000-plus nautical miles of travel completely on Mondango to date.” AY46 is scheduled for completion toward the end of 2013.
The third yacht in-build, AY54 (the owner’s lucky numbers), represents the first time this customer and his experienced team have built with Alloy Yachts and the first time the yard has worked with Sam Sorgiovanni Design based in Freemantle, Australia. AY54 will have an interior designed by Justin Redman of Redman Whiteley Dixon, and delivery is scheduled for late 2014.
